M2.2 Blog Assignment: Personal Care Products

The two personal care items I have selected to review are the Dove Advanced Care Cool Essentials Antiperspirant Deodorant and Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer With Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15. These are products that I use as part of my morning routine every day. Given how often I use these products, I wanted to verify whether they are actually good and beneficial for me to use or not.
The first product I looked up was the Aveeno moisturizer. I wash my face every morning and night followed by the application of this moisturizing cream. This product was rated at a 5, the primary reason being its effect on allergies, immuno-toxicology, endocrine disruption and use restrictions for some of the chemicals listed in the ingredients (i.e. paraben preservatives). Reading this information was very concerning to me since I use this product regularly. It is also marketed as a hypo-allergenic product which is also frustrating given the fact that I am very prone to having allergies. Although it leaves my skin soft and smooth, I believe it is best to find another less harmful product to moisturize my skin.

The second product I looked up was my Dove deodorant. I found that this product was given a score of 4, with allergies and immuno-toxicology cited as one of the top primary reasons for the scoring. Though sometimes more organic products are more expensive to purchase, I really will think about changing my deodorant to a more healthy and non-allergy causing product the next time I go to the store. This was really an eye opener for me in terms of the harm caused by the products I enjoy using every day. I hope to use this information to help better inform my purchases and lessen the harm to my body.

  1. Hello,
I really enjoyed this post, because I too used to use the same face wash! It is sort of scary to think about all these toxics entering our bodies. When I was working on my blog, I thought to myself scores like 4 or 5 are not too bad, but now that I was reading about the face wash it scares me that if you add up all these things it could lead to major harm. When thinking about 1 or 2 products, the harm does not seem too bad, but it seems to me that most of the products I use could add up and cause great harm. I too have been thinking about using more organic products.

  2. Really great write up and definitely thought provoking. I’ve always been of the general assumption that antiperspirant deodorant is among the most toxic of personal care product, so that hazard rating didn’t come as too much of a surprise. But Aveeno’s marketing has been pretty successful in framing their products as safer, gentler, and more natural than the alternatives. How disappointing to learn that it’s sinplt not the case!
