M2.4 Blog Assignment: Ken Cook and Advocacy Organizations on Toxics in Personal Care Products

I truly believed that all products were screened for safety before putting them on the market. If they are on the shelves of every store available for sale, that means that they passed, right? Cook made me realize that there are so few protections for consumers. Greed, capitalism, profits drive the pollution we see today at the great cost of people's health and well being. I wanted to cry when Cook said that "pollution begins in the womb". It is so upsetting to know that we are not protected by law from exposure to harmful chemicals and that they are hardly tested. Essentially, no one is unpolluted given that we have been polluted since the beginning of our existence. 😞
To know that outdated laws allow for companies to get away with so much and are the reason that we have rampant illnesses such as cancer and the cause of the disabling conditions we see today is so depressing. One would think that the evidence alone would be enough to push for change and charge these companies with negligence and societal harm. Once again, capitalism continues to poison us and our future all in the name of profits. 😠
Until we are able to push for new laws and reform on consumer and environmental protections for all, I hope to find other means to safe and educate myself on the ways I can reduce my exposure. I know that it will be impossible to be completely clean, but I at least hope that there are some steps that I can take to lessen the exposure and to help protect my family from the pollution. I hope that in the near future a difference will finally be made and we will all be healthy and free from the chemical toxins polluting our bodies today.

  1. Polluted from birth. How sad is that to consider? I also thought that the chemicals used in commercial production underwent some level of safety testing. Many cosmetics are tested in animals before going to market, but the products lining our shelves and cabinets are actually causing the most harm.

  2. I too thought that products were tested and made sure that they are safe before we bought them for our use. Capitalism is one of the major reasons in my opinion that we are surrounded by all this harm and no one cares to warn us!
