M5.4 Blog about your Consumer Confidence Reports (CCR) and water quality

I had trouble locating the water source and quality reports for my city through the CCR search engine so I looked it up on the San Leandro website. The city of San Leandro receives its water from East Bay MUD or East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD). EBMUD collects water from the Mokelumne River watershed through the Pardee Reservoir and Comanche Reservoir. After reading EBMUD's quality report, it seems like our water quality is pretty good and meets public health standards and federal drinking water requirements as of 2017.

It was interesting to see that everything was below federal or state limits and that the main exposures in the water are mostly due to the erosion of natural deposits. Despite this, there are still health risks that come with plumbing (lead, rust, etc), no matter how treated and purified the water may be.

EBMUD prides itself on monitoring corrosion and lead levels in water, which is reassuring. They also have removed all lead pipes and have been monitoring and sampling water since the 1990s.

I unfortunately do not use a filter, my sink doesn't really allow me to do that given that it uses a hose for the faucet. I could invest in a water filter pitcher to get around that obstacle. I do tend to buy large packs of Dasani water which now that I have learned how environmentally harmful and costly water bottles are, I will buy them less and purchase reusable bottles for me and my family.

  1. Great post, I came to the same conclusion although it’s interesting to note the difference in copper and lead between the SF and East Bay water supplies. I use a Brita pitcher for added filtration.

  2. My husband and I have been both thinking about purchasing a filter pitcher. It is definitely more cost effective and environmentally friendly. There is also a lot of water bottle tax when purchasing a bigger pack, which becomes really costly!! Knowing that both filters and the bottles are almost the same makes me feel more comfortable making this decision.
